This beautiful piece is a great example of Najeonchilgi - a particular kind of Korean handicraft where various colourful and vibrant pieces of shellfish are inlaid on certain objects. This hand-crafted box features cranes in flight, carved out of mother of pearl. The deep lacquer gloss of the box shows off the hues of the mother of pearl to its best advantage. The slightly domed box has rounded corners. It opens with two silver hinges and shuts with a delightfully detailed silver turtle latch.
In Korean legend, cranes are symbols of harmony and longevity in marriage while the turtle stands for knowledge of the future – in the past, their shells were used in fortune telling. So, this box is the perfect wedding or engagement gift.
